I have seen the future of film and it is Avatar! It is, without a doubt, totally unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.
Underneath its staggeringly beautiful scenery and stunning visual effects though, Avatar is a socially conscious movie and shows the human race in a not-so-wonderful light. We see, we want, we take - with absolutely no regard for the rights of others. We poison our planet. We kill. We are motivated by greed. Not so good huh? Beings from another world would think us savages, and rightly so.
The storyline is pretty ordinary - dare I say mediocre even - but the visual effects make that not matter one little bit. Coming out of the cinema I felt excited - which hasn't happened to me for a while - I wanted to BE a 7ft tall blue-skinned Na'vi and swoop through the sky on the back of those amazingly prehistoric creatures they ride!
Avatar heralds a revolution in blockbusters. If you only see one film this year, make it Avatar. But don't just see it - see it in IMAX 3D. In my opinion, it's one of the best films of the decade. If this is the future of filmmaking, then bring it on!
